Solutions · Missing persons

Identification that gives back a name.

Missing persons identification uses scientific methods to confirm the identity of human remains or located persons so they can be returned to their families. Panther Forensic gives prosecutors, search commissions and labs the technology to cross-check DNA, tattoos and, soon, faces, with verifiable custody.

The challenge

Mexico faces a crisis of disappearances and forensic identification. The National Registry of Missing and Unlocated Persons, managed by the National Search Commission, publishes its up-to-date figures in its statistical version.

The information that could identify a person is spread across prosecutors' offices, search commissions, forensic services and laboratories, in systems that do not always talk to each other. Every cross-check that does not happen means more waiting for a family.

How technology helps

  1. DNA and reference families

Genetic profiles of remains or located persons are compared with those of reference relatives, in pedigrees of any structure.

  2. Tattoos as distinguishing marks

Tattoos are searched using the description a family can provide, in any language.

  3. Faces, with the examiner deciding

Face search will propose candidates from photographs or video; identification is always decided by an examiner.

  4. Custody of every sample

Every set of remains and every sample keeps its digital chain of custody, from intake to report.

  5. Cross-institution matching

Federated queries allow matching across sites without centralizing or exposing each institution's database.

Frequently asked questions

Who carries out the identification of a missing person?

The competent authorities, such as prosecutors' offices, forensic services and search commissions, under Mexico's General Law on disappearances. Panther Forensic provides the technology; it does not carry out searches or identifications.

Why combine DNA, tattoos and faces?

Each method provides different information. DNA can confirm kinship; tattoos and faces help guide the search and decide which comparisons to review first.

Does families' data leave the institution?

No. Panther Forensic products are installed on each institution's infrastructure, and family and case information is not sent to external services.

What is the National Registry of Missing and Unlocated Persons?

It is the tool established by Mexico's General Law on disappearances to record missing and unlocated persons in the country. It is managed and coordinated by the National Search Commission.
